Growing up, one very common thing I was told was, “It’s either black or white, good or evil, God or the devil” But today, I realize it is one of the biggest lies I’ve ever been told. Things are not always like that. There are things we hate but have to do, there are things we love but cannot do. There are things we may deem evil but it is all that defines us. Let’s dive into what this post is about quickly, shall we?
Intersex people are individuals who are born with features that do not typically fit a male or a female. Some of these people may physically appear as particular sex but their chromosomes and many other vital organs will be the exact opposite of the sex they may appear to be. They do not fit either male or female identity and they are 1 out of 200 in every human being you see. Whom are they sexually attracted to if they don’t fit any of these labels? Can they have children? Do they fit anywhere in the LGBT spectrum?
This means that there about a dozen in my church and I see at least one intersex every day on my way to work and I may never know it. Not all intersex persons are aware of their condition and may suffer a lot of turmoil ignorantly. These are people just like us whom God blessed with these features.
Unfortunately, in many African countries just like other continents, a lot of people are ignorant about intersex persons and therefore do not agree that they are human beings too that deserve to be treated as such. In Kenya, intersex people are discriminated against, abused and murdered because they are believed to be a curse.
However, an intersex preacher who was protected by his/her mother from childhood managed to escape death. Despite this, growing up was not easy for him/her because he/she didn’t fit with the boys neither did he/she fit with the girls. He/she suffered abuse such as shaming, insults, stripping and rape.
As a preacher, he/she draws people to God through her message of love and acceptance. The love of God for all men despite who they are has been his/her candid message to all that visit his/her church. He/she has managed to rise above her condition and is helping many that identify with her condition to live above the ignorance and attacks from the society to be the best they can be.
People will always attack things they don’t understand. Bob Dylan said, “Don’t criticize something you don’t understand”. Lack of understanding being the basis for attack is typically animalistic but God has blessed the human race with such great thinking capacity to rather react to
things we don’t understand by studying…asking questions. Ignorance is not as bad as the refusal to investigate. Dyer said, “The greatest ignorance is not knowing something and refusing to investigate” People suffer unduly because of other people’s ignorance and their unwillingness to investigate.
If you still think in life, it’s either white or black, ask your pastor who enjoys the pleasures of his hand for a semen sample at the hospital. Ask the woman who had to terminate her baby to prevent her child from living in disability and illness or save her own life. Ask the Kleptomaniac if it’s as easy as it is for you to walk away from stealing.
If you think your religion is the only way to heaven, ask my ancestors who never heard about your religion how they made it to heaven..that’s if you make it there for judging others for things you are totally ignorant about. Let’s simply allow love lead because, in the end, that is all that defines God.
