As I promised in my previous post on the ‘Scary Reality of Pornography in Africa’, I was going to blow your minds on how much pornography consciously or subconsciously affects you. If you are addicted to pornography, you will definitely begin to see some effects, you probably brushed off as nothing. We are used to the idea that pornography is nothing but pornography has the ability to affect our minds and finances.
One essential part of ‘YOU’ that pornography massively affects is your mind. Pornography involves a specific part of your brain (the part of the brain that helps you to make decisions); that is same part of the brain that is affected when you are ‘high’ on drugs. In other words, pornography can mess you up as drugs could. Pornography addiction is just as bad as any other form of addiction.
The brain of a porn addict is exposed to huge volumes of chemicals like dopamine, serotonin, oxytocin and epinephrine. This causes his brain to adopt to the huge volumes of chemicals. This creates a dependency on the chemicals and he begins to crave for pornography not because of the porn itself but because of the chemicals that is being produced in the brain( the excitement) which eventually becomes a controlling ‘parent’ or ‘spouse’ in his life he cannot do away with.
Porn has the powerful tendency of changing your perception of sex; the unhealthy portrayal of sex in pornography affects your sexual activities and even your ability to climax or have any form of excitement in sex. There are many instances where a person cannot reach climax in sex with his partner unless pornography is viewed. But for those who climax, they climax quickly (pre-mature ejaculation) because of orientation pornography gives them mentally and these greatly places a strain on intimate relationships. Intimate relationships have a theme of love, affection and bonding which is non-existent in pornography. Pornography portrays an idea of sex that is unhealthy for any relationship.
Eventually, it will reduce your interest in real relationships and will only wet your desire for more porn. Porn is a huge cause of infidelity by 300%. 56% of divorces involve at least one having “an obsessive interest in pornographic websites”. 50% of people involved in cyber-sex eventually lost interest in sex with a loved one. 40% of addict marriages end in divorce.
Pornography is very instrumental in creating a negative perception about the opposite sex and a behavior of aggression, coy and disrespect towards the opposite sex. Many other beliefs and perceptions change negatively on love, the need of affection, sexual monogamy, trust between couples and promiscuity.
Pornography affects one’s ideas of what is attractive and what is not. Sometimes, men tend to be attracted to huge breasts, huge buttocks and many other preferences based on the pornography he had seen. Usually, this change in thought and preferences are gradual and unnoticeable which can affect one’s view of a partner’s sexual appeal. Same with women too.
Pornography affects the financial status of people massively especially in Africa. In Ghana, pornographic movies are usually double the price of an African movie. From interviewing owners of a few movie stands in Accra, I realized how ‘fluid’ pornographic movies are on the market because of its huge patronage. For those who prefer to watch pornography on the internet pay huge sums of money to acquire internet service in Africa. Porn is generally very expensive in Africa.
Statistically, 58% of pornographic addicts suffer financial loss all over the world. One-third of porn addicts lose their jobs.
You are probably asking yourself, “Should I be worried?” In my next post, we will find out who a porn addict is and the reason for our addiction especially with its consistent rise in Africa. Those findings will be the first steps to controlling porn addiction in a silenced continent such as Africa.
