Oprah Winfrey was once asked spontaneously, “What do you know for sure?” The film critic Gene Siskel surprised Oprah with the question during an interview while she was promoting “Beloved” in 1998. The question stimulated Oprah to examine her actions, motivations, intentions and her life more closely. Later, as editor in chief of “O” magazine, she published a monthly column, “What I Know for Sure,” and this book is a compilation of 14 years of columns, edited into snippets of inspiration and wisdom under the headings: Joy, Resilience, Connection, Gratitude, Possibility, Awe, Clarity, and Power.
I liked this inspirational little book. I read it in one sitting, but a reader could turn to a chapter a day for sparks of encouragement or motivation.
I recently came across a quote by Ralph Waldo Emerson, “Once you make a decision, the universe conspires to make it happen.” In this book, Oprah writes, “It’s as though that beautiful line in Paulo Coelho’s novel ‘The Alchemist’ comes true: ‘When you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you to achieve it.’ ”
Depending on where you are in your quest for enlightenment, you might find insight and satisfaction distilled through Oprah’s lens, or “What I Know For Sure” could kick off your own journey of investigation.
