One thing that has become very confusing about this year’s election in America is how America seems to be against Donald Trump but it is claimed that America actually voted Donald Trump as president.Wierd, right? It is really wierd for us to understand how the U.S elections are conducted. In Ghana and many places in Africa, we directly vote for whom we want as president. In other words, one man=one vote.
However in U.S.A, one man=one vote is not how presidents are elected. In the U.S, the number of electors count and not popular votes which means that a candidate who wins the election might have less votes and still win based on the number of electors he won from various states.
As confusing as this is for me as a ‘one man=one vote’ man, I will try to explain to you as plainly as possible. Electors are chosen to represent the various states in America. Some electors are more than others usually depending on the size of the state which is not directly proportional though, if you ask me.
In counting who is the winner and who is not, if a delegate wins a particular state, they get the total number of electors to their credit which means that no matter the number of people who vote for a particular candidate, it will be considered as zero. In other words, the entire state is seen to have been won by the candidate and none of his oppositions votes will count for anything.
That is why raw votes are not released during the election and only that of the electors are considered. In light of the view that some states will have more electors(determinants of the president),makes some states more important than others.
This makes it highly possible that Hilary Clinton had more votes than Donald Trump. A similar thing happened in 2006 when George Bush won the elections. The states with less number of electors although had more votes is not enough for a win. You need more electors in total and not voters.
If you ask me, this whole process is messed up and need to be reconsidered. Probably, this is done to ensure that every state is fairly represented but come on…this is rather unfair.
